School Readiness Quality Improvement Project

Did you know that children score better on intelligence and social competence tests when their caregivers have higher levels of child-related training and formal education? Do you want to learn more about how you can improve the quality of the child care you are providing?

According to the 2013 KIDS COUNT in Colorado! report, just 62% of Weld County students scored proficiently or higher on the reading CSAP (a test given at the end of third grade), and only 47% scored proficiently or higher on the writing CSAP. 39% and 58% scored proficiently or higher on the science and math CSAPs, respectively. A child’s academic proficiency in third grade is a strong indicator of her or his chances of graduating from high school and succeeding later in life.

School Readiness Quality Improvement Project works with early care and education facilities located in the neighborhoods of low-performing elementary schools. Each participating child care facility goes through a three-year process that includes a baseline evaluation, forming and implementing a quality improvement plan, and getting Qualistar rated, with the help of a coach and trainings.

Providers begin the program by completing a self-evaluation rating in their classroom or home. Providers, along with their coach, use this baseline rating to develop a quality improvement plan to prepare the provider for a Qualistar rating. Providers then receive a 1-4 star rating.

Parents are surveyed at program beginning, middle, and end. The data from these surveys are analyzed using a regression model and Hierarchical Linear Growth Model to assess improved parental understanding and involvement over time.

Goal 1: Increase childhood school readiness so students entering Kindergarten in participating schools are better prepared to learn.
Goal 2: Help parents and child care providers better educate and care for young children.
Goal 3: Develop better learning environments in early childhood settings.
